Amphibian Field Trip with Portland Parks

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Get monthly learning session (MLS) credit for playing in the park! To get MLS credit for this event you need to fill out the registration form below & attend the event.

  • There will be a Girls Inc staff present at this event. When the event is a week away you will receive an email with name & contact of the Girls Inc staff as well as any other important event info.

  • There will be snacks provided by Girls Inc. but no formal lunch. There is a lunch break built into this event so bring some lunch to have lovely picnic.

  • The maximum number of youth that can attend is 20.

  • You will be walking around a meadow outside. Be prepared by bringing: a water bottle, clothes that can get dirty, rain boots if you have them or shoes that can get dirty and layers in case the weather is unpredictable.

Objective: To learn how to identify, safely catch, and understand the life style of local aquatic and terrestrial amphibian species. 

11:00am – Meet at north parking lot and walk down to north meadow (the north meadow is a Habitat Conservation Area that is off limits to the public unless they are with a PPR staffer).

11:15am – 11:30am – Look at live aquatic breeding specimens and learn how to identify eggs, tadpoles and adults of many species.

11:30am – 12:15pm – Youth can explore the north meadow and see how many species they can find.

12:15pm – 12:45pm – Lunch in the meadow.

12:45pm – 1:20pm – Learn about and look for terrestrially breeding species.

1:20pm-1:30pm – Walk back to parking lot and say goodbye.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  • Fill out the Eureka! Monthly Learning Session form below.

  • Come to the event and connect with the Girls Inc staff that is monitoring attendance. You will receive info about the Girls Inc staff & starting location around a week away from the event.

WHAT PARENTS/GUARDIANS NEED TO KNOW:

  • This is a youth focused event. Expect to drop off your youth and come back to pick them up when the event is done.

  • The maximum number of participants is 20 and youth will be prioritized above adults.
